COMMUNITY PAGE
What does “community” mean? Community can be defined as family, neighborhood, school, church, a sports league, or just about any group that shares some common bond, interest or value. Communities celebrate culture and history. Traditions give us cause to join in annual events and celebrate who we are.
Community supports its members, like a family. Community sets boundaries and expectations. It also establishes consequences concerning those expectations, be they positive (rewards) or negative (punishments).
Community also provides help and assistance for those in need. Communities come together to raise funds for the child that requires a life saving surgery. Communities provide services and programs for the less fortunate, whether it be housing assistance, food pantries or after-school programs. Communities watch over our children on the street and drop by on our friends and neighbors who may just need someone to say “hello”. Volunteers provide many of these services and acts of kindness. Volunteers help keep our community going.
When the entire community is looked at, it is more than the “sum of its parts”. Community is an evolving organism. And that implies it can be affected by many factors, most important of which are the individuals who make up the community as well as the many “parts” within the community.
If the community cannot care of its members or “take care” of the many parts, the community can get “ill”. That is why our communities make a commitment to providing the needed services and resources to maintain a healthy environment and provide services to help it remain well. Prevention services are wellness checks and programs. The community supports many organizations that provide these, like substance abuse prevention, suicide prevention, and other youth and elderly based programs.
Our partners; the Town of Douglas, the Town of Glenrock and the Town of Lusk, county governments, all the school districts and many other organizations, help to provide the services needed for a healthy community. SFL is proud to be a member of these communities working on behalf of all citizens in Converse and Niobrara County.
